Boxing Science have developed a strong relationship with England Boxing over the past several years, and we have been fortunate enough to provide youth squads and coaches with sport science support and education.

We continue to support Youth amateur boxers through the Youth Athlete Initiative – this is where we provide FREE sport science services to under 16 boxers.

The sport science support we offered England Boxing was varied, with sport science days, testing, remote training programmes and coach education.

Sport Science Days XXX

The featured video above is from one of the many sport science days we hosted Youth squads in preparation for international championships.

This included educational sessions for boxers to get an in-depth understanding on training, programming and planning – as well as plenty of practical sessions to help movement, strength and fitness.

This provided the foundations for a remote training programme, that included the ‘exercise of the week’ in which the boxers sent in videos of them performing their S&C sessions all over the country. Check out the video below of some of the highlights of their training camp in preparation for the 2018 European Youth Championships, in which the squad returned home with 3 Golds πŸ₯‡ 2 Silvers πŸ₯ˆand 1 BronzeπŸ₯‰

Sport Science Testing

Sport science testing is highly important to gain an insight to the physiological characteristics of athletes in particular sports, as well as highlighting an individuals strengths and areas for improvement.

In terms of research, there is very little in boxing – especially in Youth boxers. Therefore it’s hard to justify the role of S&C for a youth athletic development and to provide feedback on their physical performance.

This meant that testing became a huge priority in our role with England Boxing.

Over the course of 2 years, we tested over 150 youth and junior boxers – which has provided us with a strong database of research setting standardised scores and justifications for S&C in athletic development for youth boxers.

Youth and Junior Amateur Boxers Tested on England Boxing Talent Pathway

Coach education

There were over 300 boxers on the England Boxing talent pathway across 3-4 age categories.

With 1000’s more amateurs competing all over the country, it’s difficult to improve all round athletic development on our own.

Therefore we look to educate and empower the boxing coaches through a range of educational and practical workshops.

Our mission was to give them the knowledge and confidence to start applying strength and conditioning in their sessions, and this started with the warm-up and a big emphasis on movement….
